Whether you're looking for retirement real estate in Hawaii, a Maui vacation rental investment property, affordable Maui condos, or luxury beachfront property for sale, you need as much information about Maui as you can get. Here is a very brief look at Maui: Hawaii information from a real estate buyer's point of view.

MAUI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Mission of the Maui Chamber of Commerce is to advance and promote a healthy economic environment for business: to advocate responsive government and quality education, while preserving Maui's unique community characteristics.

  • Encourage business and community prosperity by promoting economic programs designed to strengthen and enhance the financial opportunities for all businesses within the county.
  • Serve as an effective non-partisan, non-sectarian voice for business on legislative, business, social, governmental and community issues affecting Maui.
  • Identify and overcome obstacles that are detrimental to the business climate and community growth.
  • Support civic, social and cultural programs designed to increase the functional and aesthetic values of the community.
  • Promote life long learning.

MAUI'S COMMUNITY

It is often said that Maui is a community that works. Community work days get good turnouts. Community association meetings are well attended. People attend Planning Commission hearings and County Council hearings regularly, presenting testimony about residential and commercial zoning initiatives, proposed subdivisions, a proposal for a new power plant, golf courses, ocean activities, etc.

Beyond the political, there are many social occasions where visitors and residents discover common interests and friends. To be sure, there are parties everywhere, but Maui thrives on them— next door, at the beach, at country clubs, at restaurants and soon at your new house!

There are a number of outstanding environmental groups including the Sierra Club and Maui Tomorrow that combine hiking and outings with education about critical habitats, trails, watersheds and major environmental concerns.

MAUI'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Public schools in Hawaii have been widely reported as failing to meet a wide variety of standards. Furthermore, many people have misgivings about ethnic tensions.

At the elementary level, a number of Maui schools receive good grades and parent recommendations. Haiku School has a very successful program of community-based management and parents give the teachers high marks for teaching skills. Students from Kula School and Pukalani Elementary regularly score among the top schools in the state on standardized tests.

Nevertheless, a high percentage of students attend classes in temporary buildings and the teacher/student ratios are high. Quite often new arrivals will talk to real estate agents, employers and friends about individual schools and make home buying decisions based on reports about the better schools.

High schools range from outstanding programs to mediocre. Baldwin High School, for example, has excellent programs in the arts. Baldwin students regularly receive honors and scholarships to mainland colleges. Maui High also has some strong programs as does the new Upcountry high school, King Kekaulike.

It is very important to visit each school and talk to the administrators, teachers, students and parents. These visits will help you make a decision about exactly where to buy a home.

MAUI'S PRIVATE SCHOOLS

For various reasons, a high percentage of students in Hawaii attend private schools. Maui is no exception. There are a number of religious schools in most areas of Maui (West side, South side, Central and Upcountry).

In addition, there are Montessori schools in Kihei and Makawao. There is also a Waldorf School in Kula. Many parents move to the Upcountry area because of these schools which enjoy a worldwide reputation.

There are several private high schools. The best known is Seabury Hall about a mile above Makawao town. Again, quite a few families move into this area just to be close to this school. Tuition is in the $10,000/year range, so it is a serious financial commitment. St. Anthony's school in Wailuku is a Catholic school with a good reputation and more affordable fees. The Horizon Academy in Haiku features outdoor sports and internet curriculum. A new private school is also forming in Kihei.
